Indian vice-captain Shubman Gill continued his magnificent form as he scored a brilliant century to help India register a six-wicket victory against Bangladesh in their opening game of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Thursday, February 20.

Chasing 229, India were reduced to 144/4 in the 31st over before Gill’s knock anchored India’s chase and guided them to a comfortable win with 21 balls to spare.

Having been handed the vice-captaincy of India's ODI team ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, Gill repaid management’s faith as he registered his eighth century in the 50-over format.

The 25-year-old’s match-winning hundred was laced with nine fours and two sixes on a challenging surface in Dubai.

“Definitely one of the most satisfying innings that I have played and my first century in ICC events. Very satisfying and very happy with the way I performed,” Gill said after he was adjudged the Player of the Match.

Earlier, India rode on Mohammed Shami’s five-wicket haul to bowl out Bangladesh for 228 in 49.4 overs.

Meanwhile, Gill became the fastest Indian to eight ODI centuries as he touched the incredible milestone in just 51 innings.

The right-handed batter surpassed the previous record held by former India cricketer Shikhar Dhawan, who achieved the feat in 57 innings.

Since his ODI debut against New Zealand in 2019, Gill has cemented his reputation as one of India’s dependable batters in the 50-over format.

India’s swashbuckling opening batter has already amassed 2,688 runs in 51 matches at an impressive average of 62.51, while also maintaining a strike rate of 100.78. Apart from his eight centuries, Gill has notched up 15 fifties in ODI cricket.

Gill will look to continue his outstanding form when India face arch-rivals Pakistan in their second match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday, February 23.
