After a 4-wicket win in Nagpur, India face England in the second ODI in Cuttack!
India couldn’t have hoped for a better start to their Champions Trophy preparations as they defeated England by four wickets in the first ODI in Nagpur. With this win, Rohit Sharma’s side began the 3-match series on a strong note, giving themselves confidence as they built towards the big tournament.
Winning the toss and choosing to bat first, the English openers got their team off to a flying start. courtesy England’s openers was brought to a pause. Following that, Jos Buttler played a calm and composed knock of 52 in 67 balls to help England resurrect a brief hiccup. He hit four boundaries and was looking set for a big score but was eventually dismissed by Axar Patel.
The highlight of the Indian innings was Shubman Gill’s majestic knock. Gill anchored the chase beautifully, keeping the scoreboard ticking, and he ensured that India got to the target comfortably. He built a crucial 108-run partnership with Axar Patel and they got to the target in just 38.4 overs.
The takeaway from the first ODI was Shreyas Iyer's performance. He was not supposed to play the first ODI, but a last-minute injury to Virat Kohli ensured he played and he grabbed it with both hands and will look to continue his performance in the second ODI. Shubman Gill had a great game and will be confident in continuing his good run in the second ODI.
The action now moves to the second ODI, scheduled to be played at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack. This venue has been a happy hunting ground for India, where they have won 13 of the 17 ODIs they’ve played. The last ODI in Cuttack was in 2019 when India defeated West Indies. Against England, the most recent game here was in 2017, and India emerged victorious by 15 runs in a high-scoring thriller.
The pitch at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack tends to be helpful for the spinners and has variable bounce as well. This will keep the Indian spinners interested yet again. Virat Kohli is likely to return for India after missing out in the first ODI due to a knee injury. The rest of the line-up will likely stay the same.
With two more ODIs to go before the Champions Trophy, India will be eager to seal the series in Cuttack. If they win, they can test their bench strength in the final game. All eyes are on the second ODI, which promises to be another thrilling contest. Can India maintain their winning momentum and clinch the series?
