The business end of the tournament is here and we head to Chennai to hunt for a place in the TATA IPL 2023 final.
The league stage is done and dusted, the business end is here! Gujarat Titans take on the Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in the Qualifier 1 on Tuesday. A place in the final is at stake!
For the second season running, we finished with 10 wins in the league stage and topped the table. We have won four out of our last five matches and have played some great cricket.
Since the beginning of our TATA IPL journey last year, our bowling attack has scalped 186 wickets in 30 matches, the most by any team in this time period. This season too, they have been a pillar to our success. Leading the wicket-takers list in TATA IPL this time are Rashid Khan and Mohammad Shami, picking up 24 wickets each. Mohit Sharma and Noor Ahmad have taken important wickets too, with 17 and 13 wickets respectively.
Our batting department too, led by the talismanic Shubman Gill, has been fantastic. Our record run-chase in Bengaluru was a testament to our terrific record batting second, which now accounts for 14 wins in 17 matches.
Peak into the opponent’s camp
Chennai Super Kings, the four-time champions, turn up at their home ground, where they get fervent support. MS Dhoni and his troops picked up eight wins in the league stages, five of which came at Chepauk. Our travelling record, too, has been stellar this season, winning six out of the seven matches we played away from Ahmedabad, setting up a tantalising Playoff fixture.
Titan to watch out for
A century in T20 cricket is a fantastic milestone as some of the finest have found it difficult to achieve it. Shubman Gill, however, went a step ahead and scored two TATA IPL centuries in a row, strengthening his status as one of the finest in the upcoming generation. His knock under pressure against RCB ensured we picked up our 10th win of the season and without a doubt, all eyes will be on him in Chennai when we bat.
Key numbers
Shubman Gill has scored 680 runs so far in TATA IPL 2023 and is 50 runs short of current Orange Cap holder Faf Du Plessis. He is also 41 runs short of 3,500 runs in T20s.
Hardik Pandya is five runs away from completing 1,000 T20 runs as captain.
Rashid Khan and Mohammad Shami are currently leading the Purple Cap race, with 24 wickets each.
